Convert files without leaving your AI agent - Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini & more. Set up your agent

1 / 4

Use Conversion Tools from Any AI Agent

Convert files between 140+ formats directly from your AI agent - or have it build a custom converter from a plain-language description when no standard one fits. Below are the install, update, and test commands for each tool - Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI, OpenAI Codex, Grok Build, Antigravity, and any MCP client - plus the ctio CLI for terminals and scripts.

Keep it current. The hosted MCP server is always the latest version - nothing to update for MCP-based setups (Cursor, Codex, Grok, Antigravity, any MCP client). Only the installable packages have an update step: the Claude Code plugin, the Gemini extension, and the ctio CLI. Each section below includes its update command.

Choosing a surface

Conversion Tools exposes two complementary surfaces:

  • MCP server - a hosted Model Context Protocol endpoint at https://mcp.conversiontools.io/mcp. Any MCP-compatible agent connects and calls conversion tools directly. Zero install, always latest.
  • ctio CLI - a single binary your agent calls in the shell. Composes with Unix pipes, streams arbitrarily large files, works in any terminal. Best when the agent has shell access.

When an agent can run shell commands, the CLI is usually the better fit (faster, composable, no upload size ceiling). For web-only assistants, the MCP server is the zero-install path.

Claude Code

Install

Install the plugin (skill + MCP server connection):

bash
claude plugin marketplace add conversiontools/agent-skills
claude plugin install conversiontools@conversiontools-skills

Or add just the MCP server:

bash
claude mcp add --transport http conversiontools https://mcp.conversiontools.io/mcp

Update

bash
claude plugin marketplace update conversiontools-skills
claude plugin update conversiontools@conversiontools-skills

Then run /reload-plugins (or restart Claude Code).

Test

Run /mcp and confirm conversiontools shows as connected, then ask:

Convert data.json to an Excel file.

Cursor

Install

One-click - open this link and Cursor adds the server for you:

Add Conversion Tools to Cursor

Prefer the terminal? The Cursor CLI manages MCP servers:

bash
agent mcp list

Update

Nothing to do - the MCP server is hosted and always current. Cursor refreshes the tool list automatically; if needed, toggle the server off and on in Settings - MCP.

Test

On first use Cursor opens a browser for OAuth login, then ask the agent:

Convert report.pdf to Excel.

Gemini CLI

Install

bash
gemini extensions install https://github.com/conversiontools/agent-skills

The standalone conversiontools/gemini-extension repo also works and stays current.

Update

bash
gemini extensions update conversiontools

Test

Run gemini, authenticate via OAuth on first use, then ask:

Transform this XML file to CSV.

OpenAI Codex

Install

Add the MCP server, then complete the OAuth login:

bash
codex mcp add conversiontools --url https://mcp.conversiontools.io/mcp
codex mcp login conversiontools

Or install the plugin (skill + server):

bash
codex plugin marketplace add conversiontools/agent-skills

Then open the plugins browser with /plugins and install conversiontools. The CLI and IDE extension share this config.

Update

The hosted MCP server is always current (nothing to update). If you installed the plugin, refresh it from the marketplace.

Test

In the Codex TUI, run /mcp to confirm the server, then ask:

Extract the line items from invoice.pdf as JSON.

Grok Build

Install

Add the MCP server to xAI's terminal coding agent:

bash
grok mcp add conversiontools --url https://mcp.conversiontools.io/mcp

A native plugin listing in the Grok marketplace is on the way - once live, browse and install it with /marketplace inside Grok Build.

Update

Nothing to do - the hosted MCP server is always current.

Test

Convert all the PNG files in this folder to WebP.

Antigravity

Install

Google Antigravity reads MCP servers from one shared config file used by both the IDE and the agy CLI. Open it from the IDE's Settings - Customizations - Open MCP Config, or edit ~/.gemini/config/mcp_config.json directly. Antigravity uses serverUrl (not url) for remote servers:

json
{
"mcpServers": {
"conversiontools": {
"serverUrl": "https://mcp.conversiontools.io/mcp"
}
}
}

Save it. The IDE shows it after a refresh of the Installed MCP Servers panel; the CLI regenerates its MCP cache on the next launch (verify with the /mcp panel inside agy). OAuth runs in your browser on first use.

Add it to the shared config above - do not import it through the Gemini-CLI migration (agy plugin import gemini). That registers it as a half-managed import the CLI cannot enable, and tool calls are rejected as "not enabled."

Update

Nothing to do - the hosted MCP server is always current.

Test

Turn this Markdown file into a narrated MP3.

Any MCP client

Install

Any tool that supports the Model Context Protocol can connect to the hosted server:

bash
https://mcp.conversiontools.io/mcp

On first use you authenticate via OAuth in your browser. See the MCP server documentation for the full tool list and usage examples.

Update

Nothing to do - the hosted server is always current.

Agent platforms

If your agents run on an integration or agent platform, Conversion Tools may already be in its catalog. Connect it there with your API token from your Profile, and your agents can convert files without any extra setup.

ctio CLI

Install

bash
# Windows (scoop)
scoop bucket add conversiontools https://github.com/conversiontools/scoop-bucket
scoop install ctio
# macOS / Linux (Homebrew)
brew install conversiontools/tap/ctio
# Authenticate
ctio auth login

Direct downloads for every platform are in the ctio CLI documentation.

Update

bash
scoop update ctio # Windows
brew upgrade ctio # macOS / Linux

Test

bash
ctio convert -t pdf_to_excel report.pdf out.xlsx
